Batteries and generators go hand in hand with solar. They are necessary in the event of an outage.
It’s necessary to install batteries if you want to operate your inverter and solar panels in the event of an outage. Many of the inverter manufacturers now have their own proprietary integrated systems that work as transfer switches and have built-in Battery Management Systems. These systems are great options for incorporating a battery into your solar system and are very intuitive. Battery technology has come a long way in the last several years and the batteries are now more powerful and compact than ever.
At 691 Electric, we work closely with these inverter and battery manufacturers and can match and install the battery that best meets your needs. It’s very important to have a plan for incorporating batteries, on the front end, if adding storage is something you could potentially be interested in at some point down the road.
There are many utilities in Eastern North Carolina that do not have true Net Metering. These include, but are not limited to, Cape Hatteras EMC, Tideland EMC and Albemarle EMC. In these jurisdictions, the return on investment with a battery is significantly better. When you incorporate a battery, you’re essentially able to capture any power that you produce and don’t use and then use it later when you have the load. Many of the smaller EMCs also have surge pricing in the summer, which again makes storage much more desirable.
Depending on the size of the battery installed and load you’re powering, you can have back-up power for a few hours or indefinitely.
If properly sized, the panels will charge your panels during the day and you can use this power during the night or when it is dark outside.
We’re a Kohler dealer and specialize in installing the air cooled 14KW and 20KW generators. Some inverters and solar solutions now even have a way to incorporate generators during an outage. It’s important to note that you’ll need batteries for these solutions but they can add an extra level of protection to charge your batteries in the event of an outage.
We’ll install automatic transfer switches and any load shedding that you would like with these generators. We took great care in deciding which generator we thought was best before becoming a dealer, and we’re very pleased with how well the Kolhers stand up in our environment as well as their operation.
